The Chapel

Gloddaeth Hall originated as a large country house built in Llandudno, North Wales, for the Mostyn family who has owned the land since the 15th century. The Grade I listed building is now found in the breathtaking surrounds of St David’s College, an independent school in North Wales, which was established in the mid 1960’s. In the 19th century, further additions were made to the building by William Nesfield and John Douglas, who designed a new west wing for Augusta, Lady Mostyn in 1889. It is within this extension that we find the chapel.

The goal was to transform the Chapel into a space where people can come together to celebrate, reflect, and find solace. While many original features were lost over time, the design team focused on accentuating the remaining elements, such as the stunning cathedral ceiling and arched window. We also undertook the careful restoration of architectural details that had deteriorated over the centuries and reopened a previously closed fireplace.

To enhance functionality, additions were made to make the space more versatile. These include a kitchenette, a storage cupboard, and a built-in bench with storage drawers in the bay window of the chapel’s annex. These updates ensure the chapel can be used by the school for events, teaching, and meetings.

A clean and earthy colour palette compliment textures of dark wood, brass, leather and navy velvet to bring in the school’s colours, adding to the architectural beauty of the space without making it seem austere or intimidating. The result was a transformation into a beautiful and quiet space that is warm, inviting, and purposefully considered.
