<image:title>Blog - Open Plan vs. Closed Spaces – The Ultimate Design Debate - Open Floor Plans: Airy, Modern, and Social What’s to love Spacious Feel – With fewer walls, your home feels bigger and brighter. Natural light flows freely, making everything feel more open and connected. Perfect for Entertaining – If you love hosting, an open layout allows guests to move seamlessly between the kitchen, dining, and living areas, so no one feels left out. Better Sightlines – If you’ve got kids or pets, an open floor plan makes it easier to keep an eye on them while you cook or work. Modern Aesthetic – Open layouts are sleek, stylish, and create a contemporary feel that many homeowners crave.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Open Plan vs. Closed Spaces – The Ultimate Design Debate - The Downsides Noise Travels – Without walls, sound bounces everywhere. Cooking, TV, and conversations can all blend into one chaotic symphony. Less Privacy – If you need a quiet space to work or relax an open-concept home will not provide this for you. More Mess on Display – If your kitchen is part of the living space, there’s no hiding the dirty dishes when guests come over, unless you are really organised!</image:title>

<image:caption>Defined Spaces – Each room has a clear purpose, making it easier to stay organized and maintain a structured home. Better Privacy & Sound Control – Walls help block out noise, making it easier to focus, relax, or work without distractions. Cozy & Intimate – Smaller, enclosed rooms can feel warm and inviting, perfect for creating a sense of comfort. More Design Flexibility – Each room can have its own unique decor and function without clashing with the rest of the home. Image: Studio Asaï</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Open Plan vs. Closed Spaces – The Ultimate Design Debate - The Downsides</image:title>
<image:caption>Can Feel Smaller & Darker – More walls can mean less natural light flowing through the home, making some areas feel closed off. Less Social Flow – If you love having everyone together, closed-off rooms can make it harder to stay connected while cooking or entertaining. Not Always Ideal for Modern Living – Many homebuyers today prefer open layouts, so a home with separate rooms might not be as appealing. Also it’s harder to make each room flow harmoniously into the next room (unless you know what you are doing), without your house feeling higgledy-piggledy. <image:caption>Victorian terraces first emerged in the United Kingdom during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). These homes were characterised by their narrow, multi-story structures, decorative facades, and uniform appearance. They were built with the purpose to accommodate a rapidly growing urban population, they combined functionality with aesthetic appeal, often featuring intricate ironwork, bay windows, and high ceilings. With the “keep up with the Jones’” attitude, there was also the desire to have a grand entrance starting from the porch way through to the intricate plasterwork and detailing in the long hallways. When the British colonised Australia, they brought their architectural styles with them, including the Victorian terrace. Adapted to the Australian climate and lifestyle, these terraces became prominent in cities like Sydney and Melbourne during the late 19th century. While maintaining the classic Victorian charm, Australian terraces often incorporated wider verandahs, larger gardens, and modifications to suit the warmer weather. The thick brick was also perfect at keeping the houses cool in the summer months and the fireplaces adding a little warmth during those cooler months..</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why Hiring an Interior Designer is Worth the Investment - 2. Personalised Designs That Reflect You An interior designer takes the time to understand your needs, preferences, and lifestyle. Their goal is to create a space that reflects your personality while fulfilling practical requirements. For example, if you have a family with young children, a designer can recommend child-friendly layouts and materials. If you’re an entrepreneur setting up an office, they’ll ensure the design boosts productivity while impressing clients. A designer tailors every element to suit you, blending style with function.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Wallpaper That Inspires - Q : Are there any particular challenges you have to take into consideration when designing wallpaper in Australia? A : Australia is a truly unique market for wallpaper design. The Australian interior design industry is often at the forefront of global trends, and I find it exciting to create for such a dynamic space. As a wallpaper designer, my challenge isn’t just to follow trends, but to innovate and bring new ideas to life while staying true to my signature style. <image:title>Blog - Wallpaper That Inspires - Q : How do Australian cultural preferences shape your design choices? A : Bringing the outside in and drawing inspiration from Australia's rich and diverse natural landscape is a beautiful way to capture the essence of this country in wallpaper design. Australian designs are truly unique, much like our iconic flora and fauna, and it’s special to reflect that natural beauty in my work. Whether it's the bold hues of native plants or the intricate textures found in the environment, these elements help create wallpaper designs that feel authentically Australian.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Wallpaper That Inspires - Q : Do you find that you get more demand for wallpaper in Historical houses or are you starting to see a trend for it in the more modern homes? A : Australian Victorian traditional homes have always been perfectly suited for wallpaper, embracing the elegance and charm that wallpaper brings to these character-filled spaces. Recently, however, I've noticed a surge in the use of wallpaper in modern, contemporary homes as well, with homeowners seeking unique designs that enhance their interiors. My Sanctuary Lines collection was specifically created to bridge this gap, blending the timeless appeal of traditional wallpaper with the sleek, textured designs that suit contemporary spaces. By introducing texture and dimension.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Wallpaper That Inspires - Q : Are there specific patterns, colours, or textures that resonate more with Australian clients? A : I’ve noticed that my Australian Lines and Paradise Lines collections have been the most popular among my clients. These designs naturally complement Australian homes, blending effortlessly with our architectural styles and interior aesthetics. Interestingly, I’ve also had sales to Australians living abroad, who are looking to bring a touch of 'Australia' into their homes overseas. When it comes to colour palettes, neutral tones along with blues and greens tend to resonate the most with Australian consumers, reflecting both our coastal lifestyle and the calming influence of nature in design.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Wallpaper That Inspires - Q : Do global design trends, particularly from Europe, influence your work? Are there any specific European designers or movements that have inspired you? A : I have a deep appreciation for European designs, particularly the traditional works of William Morris. His visionary approach, intricate details, and romantic style were incredibly influential in my early design days. I was captivated by the meticulous craftsmanship in each of his designs and the consistency of his distinctive style. Morris’s work has had a lasting impact on my own design philosophy and continues to inspire me.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Why Do Australians Play It Safe With Colour While Europeans Go Bold? - In Australia, the preference for neutral tones like whites, greys, and beiges is deeply rooted in the country’s design culture. The Australian aesthetic is often associated with minimalism and a connection to nature, leading to interiors that are light, airy, and understated. The emphasis on open spaces and natural light means that neutral colours are often chosen to enhance the feeling of space and tranquillity. On the other hand, European interiors are known for their eclectic use of colour, drawing inspiration from centuries of art, history, and regional traditions. In countries like Italy, Spain, and France, colour is celebrated as an expression of personality and cultural identity. The use of rich, warm hues, patterned wallpapers, and intricate textiles reflects a historical appreciation for craftsmanship and a desire to create spaces that feel lived-in and unique.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Why Do Australians Play It Safe With Colour While Europeans Go Bold? - There is a trend towards creating a connection to the outdoor environment, whether it be in the bush or by the ocean, the design approach in Australia often aims to blend seamlessly with nature, favouring earthy tones and soft pastels. In contrast, Europe’s diverse climates and landscapes contribute to a broader spectrum of colour usage. Northern European countries, with their long winters and limited daylight, often incorporate bold, warm colours to create cosy, inviting interiors. Southern Europe, with its Mediterranean influences, embraces vibrant blues, terracottas, and yellows that mirror the surrounding environment. With Germany and Scandinavia embracing bold and bright. This regional diversity allows for a rich tapestry of colour in European homes that is less common in Australian interiors.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Why Do Australians Play It Safe With Colour While Europeans Go Bold? - Whilst everyone is always looking to increase the value of their home, or have a myriad of reasons for purchasing a property outside of it being the main home ( eg investment, to rent out etc). There tends to be a greater focus on the resale value in Australia than Europe. Europeans have historically been a little more about creating a lifelong home. You would often find that the French had had a home in their family for decades if not centuries. Accordingly the homes are more about following their story and being a bit more bold without fear of putting off potential buyers in the future. It is common part of the brief that clients want to be sure that their decisions are not going to polarise their potential market when time comes to sell, and hence there is a tendency towards playing it safe.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Why Do Australians Play It Safe With Colour While Europeans Go Bold? - In recent years, however, there has been a slow but noticeable shift in Australian interiors towards more adventurous use of colour. Influences from global design trends, social media, and a growing appreciation for personalised spaces are encouraging Australians to experiment with bolder hues and patterns. However, this shift is gradual, and the predominant preference for neutral tones remains strong. In Europe, the trend towards maximalism and a resurgence of vintage styles are further reinforcing the use of colour in interiors. The blending of old and new, and the celebration of individuality in design, means that European interiors continue to be vibrant and dynamic.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Why Choose Bespoke Joinery For Your Heritage Home?</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Why Choose Bespoke Joinery For Your Heritage Home? - What Is Bespoke Joinery? Bespoke joinery refers to custom-made joinery which is tailored to fit unique spaces and requirements. Unlike off-the-shelf solutions, bespoke joinery is crafted with superior skill and attention to detail. This allows the joinery to be designed specifically to match the original design and fit perfectly into the areas that they are to be placed. Whereas off-the-shelf is convenient and perceived to be a cheaper option from the outset, they are usually only available in set dimensions or modules meaning that they are more often than not incompatible with the older homes.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Why Choose Bespoke Joinery For Your Heritage Home? - Perfect Fit: Bespoke joinery ensures a perfect fit for irregular and unique spaces which are typical in heritage homes. This customisation can also help to maintain the home’s architectural integrity. Authenticity and Aesthetics: Custom joinery can replicate original designs and materials, preserving the home’s historical authenticity and enhancing its aesthetic appeal. Quality and Durability: Bespoke joinery is made from high-quality materials and superior craftsmanship, ensuring long-lasting durability. Lets face it, not many of us can guarantee our flat pack skills and still sit there wondering if the 5 screws you have left over are going to show their relevance in a few months time. Value Addition: Custom Joinery adds value to the property by enhancing its beauty and functionality, making it more attractive to potential buyers.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Why Choose Bespoke Joinery For Your Heritage Home? - VICTORIAN HOME - DARLING POINT, SYDNEY</image:title>
<image:caption>The client was frustrated that the home did not have adequate storage in the bedroom. The previous owners had put in some-off-the-shelf “fitted” wardrobes. They where not fitted around the skirt and “packed” down the sides and internally to allow for the doors to open over the skirs. The biggest issue with this was that the internal drawers where shifted across so that in order to use the drawer to open, you had to open both doors fully. When the client contacted me (Emma) to design the new cabinetry, she was worried that the only way that they would get more space would be to take the original Victorian fireplace out. As you can imagine, this is completely against my Interior Design religion!! But I mangaged to explain that if the joinery is done to fit the recessed space the increase of overall room space will be instant. This week I went on a site visit to see the bedroom and elegant bespoke made-to-fit wardrobes were there, the fireplace remained and the client was overjoyed at the extra space she had as a result.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why Choose Bespoke Joinery For Your Heritage Home? - THE CHAPEL - LLANDUDNO, NORTH WALES</image:title>
<image:caption>The brief for this beautiful space was to create extra storage for an Annex adjacent to a space that would be re-instated as a Chapel for a private school. The space was left for years as a storage area. The annex had been converted into a multi-use space, one of which was a laundry space at the boarding school! The flooring was missing planks and the whole area was in a state of disrepair. For this particular space we had to come up with custom designed joinery to provide the much needed storage for storing books, microphone wires and the like to assist in the teaching that would happen in this space, as well as the Sunday Morning services that where to be led here for the students and staff in the boarding community. Restoring this space had to be done in a very sympathetic way as this was a Grade I listed building. We started with restoring the floor and then covering it with board so we could preserve it and eventually tile over the existing floor. The walls where restored with lime stone render (what they used in the 1800’s) and painted with a breathable lime wash paint. We then restored all the architectural features that where missing and designed a built-in bench in the bay window, with storage drawers underneath. The challenge was to design and build it around the existing architectural features and moulding on the walls that could not be removed at all. The resulting outcome was a space that was aesthetically pleasing with joinery that looked liked it belonged there, and also provided everyone with much needed storage.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Evolution Of The Victorian Terrace: A Tale Of Two Continents - Fortunately these little time capsules of historical architecture have remained part of the landscape in the inner cities of Australia and the UK, with some being protected by heritage, at least in terms of their facade if not internally. But like anything in life in order for them to survive and work in modern times they need to adapt. Whilst some decades dictated a trend of stripping every little bit of detail out of them, we are definitely in an era now where the detail is very much desired, and as interior designers it is about retaining this detail, whilst allowing the properties to function in a way which works with the demands of modern life…. And what’s more allows them to continue to adapt yet retain their beauty as these trends change in the years to come.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Evolution Of The Victorian Terrace: A Tale Of Two Continents - Heritage Preservation: whilst this has not always been the case there is definitely more of a trend in both continents to prioritise maintaining the historical elements that give Victorian terraces their unique character. Where these are being added back in there may be a more watered down hint to avoid looking contrived but to give a nod to the details that once were. Modern Amenities: Ultimately while clients like the character they are not really willing to compromise and retain outdoor toilets and bring out the tin bath in front of the open fire! As such it is about cleverly integrating modern kitchens, bathrooms, and technology to allow the home to work for the now (and hopefully well into the future) whilst respecting the home's period features. Sustainability: As designers we also cannot ignore an increasing focus on sustainable practices, such as energy-efficient upgrades and eco-friendly materials. Regardless of the continent, obtaining comfort with the lowest footprint and financial outlay is undoubtedly a large factor.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Evolution Of The Victorian Terrace: A Tale Of Two Continents - Eunice is the founder and Creative Director of EA Design . Having travelled extensively and living in numerous places including Hong Kong and Australia, these experiences have enhanced her deep appreciation for art, culture and the built environment. Coming from an art background, she’s always had an eye for design, which she actively started pursuing in 2016. Respectful of the architecture that was heralded before her, Eunice is skilled at creating environments that resonate with the era, yet tell the story of the people that occupy it now and into the future. She currently lives in North Wales with projects spanning across North Wales and other parts of the U.K.</image:title>

<image:caption>Colours are often described as warm or cool. Warm colours are those with warm undertones. These are red, yellow, orange and yellow-green. Shades like these can make a room look cozy, bright and radiant. It can also make small rooms appear smaller and large rooms appear more intimate. Cool colours are on the opposite of the colour wheel. Colours with a cool undertone are purple, blue and blue-greens. Using these colours in a room will have a calming effect. Do note that it's important to remember that when you use these colours on your walls that there is plenty of natural light coming into the room, as it can make a room feel colder.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We know it best as Scandi-style. It is an interior style that is all about light filled spaces that are well designed in a practical way that promotes overall wellbeing and create a sense of relaxation. Scandinavian designed homes are both about comfort and practicality. It is very much a minimalistic design style in that it has a soft earthy colour palette, uncluttered and functional modern furniture pieces that can be utilised in different ways. Think simple plywood stools for side tables, for example.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Contemporary style is a general term used to describe what is “in” and relevant now. It is a style that is constantly evolving. It stared in the 1970’s and continues to pull inspiration from other design styles like modern, minimalistic, rustic and bohemian. Contemporary homes are simplistic with a subtle sophistication where a deliberate use of texture and clean lines characterise it’s open plan living spaces. To get the look, opt for simple paired-back spaces where soft furnishings like cotton, linen and wool have been coupled with natural materials like wood, stone and metal.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bohemian or Boho style as it’s better known, has it’s roots in Bohemia, a region in current day Czech Republic, that the Romani people occupied. They where best know for their creativity as artists, musicians and tradespeople. ‘Bohemian’ evolved in 19th Century France, to include any creative person that led an unconventional lifestyle. Today Bohemian design style indicates an aesthetic that takes its influence from those free spirits of generations past. Boho style is relaxed, bold and unconventional. The look typically involves an eclectic mix of natural elements and many colours, patterns and textures from different cultures. It is essentially a style that is individual, free-spirited, creative and fun, that tells the story of where you have been and what is important to you.</image:caption>
